Designed to fit the edge of the site overlooking the Androscoggin River
as it flows toward Bath, the structure is designed with materials and
details to reflect local historic mill construction found elsewhere along
the Androscoggin. The scale of the structure is carefully sculpted to reduce
the bulk of the building so that it doesn’t overwhelm the smaller scale of
the adjacent historic buildings on site. The lower of four levels sits just
above the high water level at the edge of the river, and is not visible from
Main Street. At the front entrance side, the third floor roof is framed as a
continuous dormer, which adds visual interest at the roof while reducing the
height and scale of the front wall. A clock tower with lantern cupola will
be a highlight of the redeveloped Topsham downtown district.
Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2006.
