This project was intended to bring the historic Limerick Municipal Building
into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The building
houses town offices, meeting rooms for the selectmen and planning board, and
on the top floor, the town library.
Because the building is historically significant, alterations brought by
this project were subject to approval by the Maine Historic Commission. In
order to avoid constructing an extensive ramp at the front of the building,
we developed a new entrance and lobby at grade at the side of the building.
The elevator itself is contained entirely within the structure of the
existing building.
In addition to alterations to improve accessibility, the project addressed
Life Safety deficiencies, including installation of a sprinkler system, fire
alarm system, and fire rated stair enclosures.
The success of the initial project prompted the town to seek other grants to
expand and remodel
the library. With
the aid of the Maine State Library and the Stephen and Tabitha King
Foundation, a series of former classrooms on the top floor were opened up to
create a unified, modern library.
